Our Pastor | Sanctifier, teacher and enabler  
 

The pastor is the shepherd of the parish, exercising pastoral care in the community entrusted to him under the authority of the diocesan bishop in whose ministry of Christ he has been called to share, with the assistance of both professional and other lay members of the Christian faithful.

V  Attended St. Joseph Hall Minor Seminary, Greensburg

V  Attended St. Francis Seminary, Loretto

V  Bachelor’s degree in philosophy

V  Master of divinity degree

V  Ordained May 4, 1974 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg

Sanctifier

Father Jim:

The pastor is to see to it that the Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly; he is to work to see that the faithful are nourished through the devout celebration of the Eucharist and penance; likewise he is to encourage active participation in the sacred liturgy, being vigilant lest any abuses creep in.

V Celebrates liturgy weekdays and three Masses on the weekends.

V Hired a full-time coordinator of liturgy/music and facilitates planning of services.

V Hears confessions weekly & six penance services yearly.

V Sets the tone for renewal and spiritual growth.

V Imparts solemn blessings.

V Presider of morning & evening prayer.

 

 

Diocesan Commitments

Father Jim:

The pastor's ministry is intrinsically bound up with that of his bishop.

V Attends deanery meeting.

V Participates in the clergy conference & clergy convocation.

V A member of the diocesan board of consultors.

V Attends Chrism Mass, ordination & other diocesan celebrations.

 

 

Teacher

Father Jim:

The pastor must see that the word of God is announced to all with the faithful being instructed in the truths of the faith; he is to foster works of social justice; being attentive to those who are not practicing their faith or any faith.

~ Canon 528

V Plans all homilies around the Gospel for weekday & weekend Masses, funerals, weddings, special services and penance services.

V Hired a full-time director of religious education and faith formation.

V Meets with engaged couples.

V Collaborates and participates in adult education programs.

V Counsels and offers spiritual direction.

V Spiritual advisor to the Altar Rosary Society and Legion of Mary.

 

Steward

Father Jim:

The pastor is to see to it that the goods of the parish are administered in accord with the norms of the church.

~ Canon 532

V Monitors expenses, revenue.

Enabler

Father Jim:

The pastor should strive to know his people; visit families, share the key moments in their lives, strengthening them in the Lord. He should promote the concept that all people are members both of the diocese and of the universal church. He is to promote lay involvement in the church's mission and encourage consultation and participation.

V Baptizes, marries, confirms, anoints and buries the faithfu.l

V Hired a full-time minister of care.

V Takes communion to homebound.

V Invites the lay to participate in social works sponsored by parish, local community or diocese.

V Presides over the pastoral council & assists in setting agenda.

V Consults and collaborates with finance council.

V Plans and collaborates with staff monthly.

 

 

Spiritual and Physical Needs

Father Jim:

The pastor must make spiritual retreat, annually and may be absent for vacation not to exceed one month.

~ Canon 533

V Takes his retreat in September.

V Breaks his vacation into three or four different periods.

V Takes one day off in the week.
