Bereavement

    Home > Ministries > Bereavement

Rite of Committal Ministry

The conclusion to the funeral journey is the committal. A trained funeral minister recites the prayers at the cemetary, thus supporting the mourners in the final step of the journey by this proclamation of faith.

Description of the Group's Activities:

Prayer, lead discussions; continue to work with parishioners after the funeral as they grieve loved ones; special videos.

Skills/talents needed from volunteers:

Patient listeners; encourage participants to share thoughts; act as a support and mentor.

Time commitment involved:

One hour or longer the last Thursday of every month except in the summer or bad weather.

How this ministry can positively affect lives:

A response to the needs of people grieving helps them along a journey. No member should grieve alone. A bereavement leader is also a recipient to prepare for their encounters.

Wake Service Ministry

The wake is intended to be the principal rite in the time between death and the funeral liturgy. This service is of a communal nature, especially since many people are unable to attend the funeral Mass. Following a ritual at the funeral home, the minister leads those present in the prayers after death. The service takes about 20 minutes. It is recommended that the minister spend some additional time in conversation with the family members.

Description of the Group's Activities:

Leads those present in the prayers after death.

Skills/talents needed from volunteers:

Concern; compassion; good speaker. The ritual is easy to follow.

Time commitment involved:

Fifteen to 20 minutes for service plus meeting with the family for Mass involvement. Conversation is as important as prayer. You help plan the funeral.

How this ministry can positively affect lives:

A positive connection to church and family. This is a ministry of consolation.
