The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God (January 1)
This week the Church celebrates an important Marian feast - under the title of Mother of God. Theotokos, a Greek word applied to Mary and meaning - the "God bearer," resonates at the season of Christmastime. At this point in the celebration of Christmas, the feast offers a contemplative moment, a rare and cherished experience in such a frantic time of year. Because of so many problems in our world, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated January 1 as the National Day of Prayer for Peace. It would be good to pray for the elimination of all war, violence, oppression and sins against justice not only in our country but also throughout the whole world.
