Dedication of St. Mary Major (August 5)

In the year 431, after the Council of Ephesus (which affirmed Mary's title as Mother of God), Pope Sixtus III built a basilica in Rome on the Esquiline Hill.  St. Mary Major is the oldest church in Western Christendom dedicated in honor of Mary, the Mother of God.
