The Gift of Treasure
Our gifts help sustain our church open for all to seek his grace and love. They also help the parish community bring Christ's healing embrace to the elderly, the sick, the abused and the poor in our communities.
Gifts also bless the giver, for Christ has promised, "Give and it shall be given to you ... for the measure you measure will be measured back to you" (Lk 6:38).
God gives his goodness to us unconditionally, and we are called to model our giving after God's example. As good stewards, we should plan our church giving carefully. When and what we give to our church and to charities should be deliberate decisions. They should recognize our need to give and our ability to give as our thanks for God's unconditional goodness to us.
The Bible speaks of the importance of tithing. One interpretation recognized in many parishes is to give the first part of our income as a thanksgiving to God. Half to our parish and the other half as the Spirit prompts our hearts to aid the bishop's fund, Catholic school scholarships, a hospital, Right-to-Life work, a needy family and more.
Giving fully in proportion to our ability is an important decision. Pray about it. Within a family, discuss it together and pray about it together and individually.
Your decision will help furnish the material support for us to fulfill our increased spiritual commitments of time and talent to serve the needs of our parish and the needy in our parish family.
May God guide you in your decision and bless you for your generosity.
Different Types of Gifts
